You know that nice feeling you get when things just work? Well, here at Mendeley we love coming up with ways to make that happen for researchers everywhere, and building features that save them time is usually a good way to go about it.

As a PhD student myself, I know that one of the biggest time drains when doing your research can be the process of finding, processing and organizing your relevant citations and papers. Having to download each one individually before adding them to Mendeley was a big frustration when doing my literature review, and many academics in our community shared similar experiences.

That’s why the Mendeley team put a lot of work in building an improved Web Importer that was released last June and then integrating it with Science Direct and Scopus (as well as most other sites!) to make the process of putting those papers and references in your Mendeley library as smooth and painless as possible, just as it should be.

To give Mendeley users even more options though, we’ve also worked with Elsevier to build the “Export to Mendeley” functionalities right into the Scopus and Science Direct platforms, which means that you don’t even have to install the web importer to send articles and citations to Mendeley, and you can also choose which folder in your library they should go into.

The fact that this is all done without you having to navigate away from your search results or article pages will hopefully speed up the research workflow for our users, and help them spend more time reading and writing papers rather than wrestling with them.   1. Very useful!
    I tried this from Scopus, and I was a bit sad that the fulltext PDF was not downloaded.
    Is it possible to get some kind of indication of this before saving?
    Something simple like any of

    * “Full text PDF will be stored” (maybe with option to disable/skip)
    * “Full text must be downloaded from publisher”
    * “Could not find Full text information. Sorry.”

    You can actually see whether the fulltext PDF will be downloadable inside the Mendeley importer popup (see the first screenshot). If there is a PDF icon next to an article, the fulltext PDF will be downloaded. Otherwise a blank document icon will be shown.

  3. Hi, nice feature. just one question. I store my pdf-s on an external harddrive. is there any smooth way to get there the automaticly downloaded files from mendeley’s default download folder on the C: drive? thanks!

    • Yes – enable the file organizer under Tools -> Options -> File Organizer and Mendeley will automatically put your downloaded files in the specified location.

      Please be aware though that if you start the app and the external hard drive is not plugged in, Mendeley will try to re-download all the files that it expected to find there again.

  4. Dear Sir,
    I don’t see a PDF icon next to an article, the fulltext PDF when i use scopus. Because our institution use SFX system to downlowd PDF. We use http://136.165.41.136:3210/sfxulg to download PDF when we use EndNote.
    Save to mendeley is a very interesting tool. Could you tell me how I have to make to download the PDF when I use Scopus with SFX.
    Otherwise i see a PDF icon next to an article, the fulltext PDF when i use scienceDirect. Because when we use ScienceDirecte we don’t need SFX to download PDF.

Hi there, does this nice new integration of Mendeley on the Elsevier platform mean that Thomson’s EndNote is essentially left out in the cold – the option I used to get on Science Direct to direct export my citations to EndNote Web or Desktop but that has just recently stopped working. Can you offer any workaround or suggestion as to how I could get Science Direct export citation to work with more than one direct exporter ??

  6. Hi,
    How to add PDF files from Sciencedirect.com to the citation entry that I already have in my Mendeley Library. From emerarldinsight I could drag the PDF icon and drop on to the corresponding “File attached” column.
    From science direct I either drag+drop and delete the already existing citation entry or save PDF in folder and add file to the citation from folder.

    Please suggest a better way if available. It is required because I use Mendeley library search engine first to add citation entry and then search for PDF downloads, when the PDF download not done automatically.
