Improving your Search Experience

Add ease to your search experience and be on a first name basis with your references. Users can now search for authors by their first name in the library search.  

General Improvements

In addition to adding new features, we are always improving upon our existing features to ensure they run smoother than ever so we made some improvements to the speed of the application.

The new Mendeley Reference Manager has been designed with a huge range of features that simplify your referencing workflow and help you stay organized and fully focused on your research. Here are a few that you might have missed! 

Organise your library like a pro 

Save yourself time trying to find the references in your library with a file attached. Did you know that you can sort your references by file, which means you can put all references with a file attached at the top.  

Level up your Collections game

Have you ever wanted to turn a sub-collection into a parent collection and spent hours moving references from one collection to another? Or maybe you just want to learn something new? Mendeley helps you turn 4 steps into 2. Simply drag a sub-collection to “Collection” and just like that it becomes a parent collection.

Save time with Keyboard Shortcuts:  

Here is another keyboard shortcut to help you save time in Mendeley Reference Manager:

Keep track of where you were:  

Users no longer have to worry about remembering what they last read within their PDFs. When users resume reading their PDFs even after closing the reader, Mendeley Reference Manager remembers the last position the user was in.    

Customise your library to your preference: 

Mendeley Reference Manager now has a new “View” section which gives the users the ability to choose how much reference information is shown in their library. Additionally, users can manage what columns they can see in their library.

Organise your library with ease: 

It can get tedious doing things one by one, which is why users can now drag and drop multiple references from their “All References” smart collection, into their personal collections.

How to Avoid Burn-Out When Writing

Writing is one of the most important forms of communication and has been pertinent in allowing academics to: share their ideas, engage in critical thinking and collaborate with other academics. Sometimes as writers we can encounter various blockers, one of them being complete burn-out. Fortunately, we know that there are ways to ensure we limit the effects of burn-out when we write. 

Admit you’re burned-out. 

Prevention is better than cure and the best way to prevent something is knowing when it is coming. It is important to acknowledge when you are starting to feel overwhelmed and exhausted, it is even more important to know that once you have recognised that, it is okay to take a step back and recharge.  

Prioritise self-care. 

Don’t forget to take care of yourself and your mind.  

  • Take a break; go for a walk, partake in a relaxing hobby or stimulate your mind with a creative activity.  
  • Adjust your schedule; consider shortening your writing sessions or having longer/more frequent breaks.  
  • Set boundaries; figure out where you start hitting a mental block and define your working hours accordingly. 

Get some help. 

It’s okay to get some help, in fact getting help can be incredibly liberating. Whether that is collaborating with fellow academics or using reference management software.

We are always working hard at Mendeley to release features that will make the researcher’s life a bit easier. Here we share our most recent releases in Mendeley. 

Take advantage of a variety of options

Previously the only citation style available with the ‘Copy as citation’ function was American Psychological Association (APA), users are now able to select their default preference from a list of 10 citation styles. 

Simply select a citation via the checkbox and a toolbar should appear at the bottom of the screen. Select “Copy as” and then “Change Citation Style”, your Preferences side panel will pop up where you will be able to choose from the list. 

Quicker imports than before  

Users have always been able to import multiple files and to make that process even quicker and easier, users can now import multiple files at a time by simply importing the folder containing them.  

Easily shed the extra references 

Further in our bid to make processes quicker and easier, instead of deleting each duplicate reference, users can now select the reference they want to keep and automatically delete the duplicate references they don’t want. 

All you have to do is go to your Duplicates collection, select the “Actions” menu on the reference you want to keep and select “Keep this reference only”. 

Personalise your library experience 

In addition to resizing columns to user preference, users are now able to organise those columns to their preference by dragging and dropping the column titles.

Streamline your workflow: Watched Folders are now in Mendeley Reference Manager!

Introducing Watched Folders in Mendeley Reference Manager! Watched Folders allow users to automatically add new documents/references into their library without going through the in-app import flow. All you have to do is drop a file into your Watched folder, and Mendeley will automatically import it into your library. 

Why you should use them 

There are a few reasons why Watched Folders is an important tool for your workflow. It allows for automated reference import, which means it saves users a lot of time manually importing references, and also helps users to effectively organise their files into one local folder.  

How to use them 

Currently Watched Folders is only available in Mendeley Reference Manager Desktop. Simply select your account icon in the bottom left corner of the application, select “Preferences” and you should see the Watched Folder section. Select the Watched Folder option to open the Watched Folder panel and select “Choose folder to watch” to choose the folder you want to use. Now that you have selected a folder you can add your files to the folder, and the next time Mendeley Reference Manager syncs, your files should be available in your library.

What’s New in Mendeley: Our Most Recent Releases

It’s a new year and Mendeley’s new year resolution is always to be better than the year before. We’re so proud of what we accomplished last year, and we are eager to do more this year.  

To begin the year with a bang, here are a few features we have recently released in Mendeley.  

Bridge the Gap Between Your Citations  

Save time and cut out the middleman (literally). Whether you want to maintain text-source integrity, or just avoid visual clutter, Mendeley Cite users can now merge citations, from anywhere in their document, together.  

Simply highlight the section containing the citations you would like to merge together and select “Merge Citations” in the drop-down menu. 

Import Bibtex Files Freely  

Previously, some users were experiencing an issue where their bibtex files would either only partially be imported into MRM, or not be imported at all. However, after an upgrade, users no longer have to worry about this and should be able to see all the bibtex files they have imported into their MRM library. 

Easily Locate Your Files  

MRM’s in-built reader allows users to read, annotate, highlight and even note-take, however we understand that some users have their own preferred tools which is why we have made it easier to locate your references in your local machine. In MRM users can now open the containing folder their chosen reference is in.  

All you have to do is select the “More actions” menu in the “Files” section of the right-hand side panel for your chosen reference, then select “Open containing folder”. 

Get to Your Destination Quicker  

Initially users would have to scroll through their PDFs to get to the page they wanted, which could be time-consuming with references with numerous pages. Users can now use the new PDF navigation arrows and page numbers to get to where they want much faster than before.

Save time with Keyboard Shortcuts: 

Last month we released a few keyboard shortcuts. This month we have released a few more to help users better navigate Mendeley Reference Manager. Here is a list of a few more keyboard shortcuts that can help you save time in Mendeley Reference Manager:

Easier organisation with the Unsorted Collection: 

When you have a large library, it can be hard to keep track of what collection a reference belongs to, and even harder to know whether a reference belongs to a collection at all. Which is why Mendeley Reference Manager has added a new smart collection that contains all references that do not belong to a user collection.

Drag and Drop Import into Personal Collections: 

Save time and cut out the middleman. Just like with the ‘All References’ smart collection, users can now drag and drop references from any folder, hard drive, or external storage into their user collections in Mendeley Reference Manager. 

Resize Table Columns: 

Customise your library experience with Mendeley Reference Manager; whether you want to see as much information as possible, or you prefer a summarised view, users can now resize their table columns to their preferences.

The Most Popular Citation Styles, Revealed!

Citations are incredibly important to a researcher’s workflow, as well as an author’s merit. The two more well-known kinds of citation formats are in-text citations and footnote citations. 

Not too long ago we announced the release of footnote citation styles in Mendeley Cite and while adding that feature, we realized that information about citation styles isn’t readily available. And so, in our ongoing bid to constantly contribute to the research community, we have decided to share our data. 

We came into this research period with expectations; the assumption was that in-text citations would dominate the list as they are the most popularly used citation style.

And whilst the results corresponded with our assumptions, we didn’t expect to see only in-text citations in the top 15. But this is understandable as footnote citations styles only make up about 1% of citation style usage across Mendeley Cite, with “Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition (full note)” taking the top spot as the most popular footnote citation style (according to Mendeley Cite October 2023 data). 

APA, IEEE and Vancouver being the top three most popular overall was also not a surprise as they are frequently referred to as some of the most used citation styles. However, in contrast to our assumptions MLA (Modern Language Association) was not included in the top 15 even though it is more than often cited as one of the most popular citation styles.

Users can now navigate Mendeley Reference Manager using keyboard shortcuts. Here is a list of keyboard shortcuts that can help you save time in Mendeley Reference Manager:

Steer more easily with Panning Mode:  

Mobile users are now able to scroll more easily when reading their PDFs in the Mendeley Reference reader.  

To do this, select the new pan icon in the reader and then scroll as you usually would. 

Citing made easier with the new Insert Citation Button:

Users have always been able to insert a citation by selecting their chosen citations and selecting ‘insert # citations’ in the pop-up at the bottom of the add-in. Now Mendeley Cite has released a new button that gives users the ability to insert a citation with one click.  

Simply identify the reference you would like to cite and select the blue Insert Citation button.
