Faster Writing with Smarter Bibliographies in Mendeley Cite

At Mendeley, we know that managing references is more than just keeping them organised, it’s about turning them into impactful research. That’s why we’re always working to make Mendeley Cite faster, smoother, and more reliable, especially for those tackling large documents with hundreds of citations.

Until now, Mendeley Cite automatically refreshed your bibliography every time you added or edited a citation. This kept everything up to date, but for users with long reference lists, it sometimes meant slower performance.

To give you more control, and a better experience, we’re introducing manual bibliography updates. With this update, you can decide exactly when your bibliography refreshes, helping you work without unnecessary slowdowns while still ensuring your references are accurate and complete.

So what’s new?

A More Customisable Experience

With this update, you can now choose how your bibliography is maintained per document:

Automatic updates: Bibliographies refresh as you edit citations.

Manual updates: You decide when to refresh your bibliography. Mendeley Cite will let you know if it’s out of date and display the last update time.

Insert later: Insert your bibliography later when you’re ready.

If you prefer using manual updates for every document, you can set this as your default in More Options. Once enabled, you won’t see these options again, just a reminder that you’re in manual mode.

Non-Intrusive by Design

If you’re already working in a document with a bibliography inserted, you won’t notice anything new. The update only affects new documents. The experience is designed to be seamless, keeping you in control without interrupting your workflow.

Simpler Bibliography Management

We’ve also streamlined bibliography handling. Instead of being able to insert multiple bibliographies into a single document, you can now only insert one. If you delete it, you can reinsert it but only one bibliography can exist per document.

Why This Matters

  • Improved performance: No more slowdowns from auto-refreshes.
  • More control: Choose when and how your bibliography is updated.
  • Cleaner documents: Simplified rules for inserting bibliographies.

This update gives you flexibility, and it ensures Mendeley Cite continues to support your writing process efficiently. It’s just one of the ways Mendeley Cite can help you simplify your citation workflow. Try Mendeley Cite for free today, and discover how it makes writing easier.
