Mendeley for iOS Updated

Our latest update for the Mendeley iOS app has just gone live on the app store.

We’ve listened to your feedback and have added the most often requested feature: Sort documents by Title / Author / Year / Imported Date.  Tap the icon in the bottom right of the document list to change the sort order.  Authors are sorted by the last name of the first listed author, and we’ve changed how author names are displayed to “Lastname F,” (it was previously F. Lastname) to make this sort method more obvious.

Other changes include:

  • Fixed an error when opening documents from another app via “Open In…”
  • Fixed a bug with annotation syncing
  • My Publications and Favorites can now show more than 20 documents
  • .pdf file extension is shown when sending files via email
  • Fixed a crash when downloading PDFs from a search results list
  • Misc. other bug fixes

What’s next?

We have a plan for the next 6 months or so, but we want to make sure we’re building the stuff you need, and in the right order.

Please vote on the options below (which will all be coming at some point), and we’ll use this to help us prioritise what we build next.  You can always vote or request features at any time on our feedback forum too. (please set the category as “mobile” when requesting mobile features)

Help, I’m still having sync problems.

If you’re having trouble syncing, try logging out of the app and back in.  This will force a full re-sync of the library.  Once you’ve done this initial sync, future syncs should be faster, as it will only download documents which have been updated since the last sync.

If this doesn’t resolve your problem, please contact our support team via the app (the link is located in “Settings”).

  1. Thanks for the feedback on marking as read/unread being a wanted feature. Very much noted, and we’ll work it in. In order for it to be useful, we want to fix the desktop functionality so that it doesn’t mark something as “read” if it’s merely been opened to the first page. Once we fix this, we’ll make sure we bring it to all devices.

    That sounds brilliant!

Really pleased with what I am seeing on iOS and desktop. Thanks!

  3. I voted selective sync. I cannot even consider using mendeley for iOS without it. Alongside this, I would suggest that library search should be achieved server-side when network connection is available, as the on-device search is too slow. That way I would also be able to search my whole library and access any of my items on demand, even with selective sync enabled.

On another note, the update has killed the app for me. It is now crashing on the red screen, a la version 1.x

  4. I second osm’s post. This update has killed the app for me – crashing on the splash screen also.

    • Sorry to hear this, could you both please (first reinstall from the app store and see if that helps) contact support@mendeley.com so we can get more details about your devices etc. We’ve seen a decrease in crashes rather than an increase overall, so we think this is an edge case, but we want to get to the bottom of it.

      Thanks.

  5. This is a sort of obvious question.. but will an Android version be available soon? This is important for the rest of us that aren’t on iOS. Thanks!

  6. Greetings! Very useful advice within this post! It’s the little changes that make the most important changes. Thanks a lot for sharing!
